SEEN AND CELEBRATED: Identity, Diversity, and Belonging at The Berkeley School

Is a year-long program, funded by the 2017 Count Me In initiative. The program will support the entire TBS community in doing what it does most joyfully: learning and growing together.

Why: When we feel welcomed, seen, and celebrated for who we are, we know we belong. That powerful feeling of belonging opens us to transformative learning and growth. Belonging ignites our minds, awakens our hearts, and engages us in action that transforms our communities, our world, and ourselves.

How: The feeling of belonging grows from a seed of identity: knowing one's social, emotional, and intellectual self. Knowing ourselves allows us to see where our identities converge and diverge with others around us. From this perspective, we can recognize diversity, embrace it, and celebrate it as an essential aspect of humanity. When we embrace and celebrate diversity, we become more aware of the ways that the social and cultural systems around us do (or do not) promote justice for the diversity of people within them. When we become aware of injustice, our strong feeling of connection to other people calls us to action. And through action, we can create the feeling of belonging that accelerates learning and growth – for ourselves and for others.

What: At the Berkeley School, these critical elements of Identity, Diversity, Justice and Action frame the teaching and learning that takes place every day, in all classrooms and across both campuses. The program we are calling Seen and Celebrated: Identity, Diversity, and Belonging at The Berkeley School will amplify this classroom learning by providing community-wide opportunities to explore the ideas rooted in the anti-bias framework of our children's education.

Seen and Celebrated: Identity, Diversity, and Belonging is a year-long program, funded by the 2017 Count Me In initiative. The program will support the entire TBS community in doing what it does most joyfully: learning and growing together. Over the course of the 2017-18 school year, Seen and Celebrated will create opportunities for TBS students, faculty/staff, and families to learn more about identity development, to see and celebrate the diversity of our multicultural community, and to support environmental and social justice through meaningful action. These opportunities will support our community in sharing experiences and conversations about areas of identity (such as race/ethnicity, gender, class, and learning differences) that are essential to understand and often challenging to discuss: and by doing so, we will continue to nurture a culture of belonging.

We Need You: To partner with us in this year-long program. Can we Count You In?
